Nokia N95 touch enabled with Knight Rider Series

I can almost hear the dubious whispers now, “It isn’t real!” and to be honest those covert whispers are probably right. Anyway, the screenshot below is apparently taken from the new Knight Rider series. Which seems to show a type of touch user interface on the Nokia N95, so is Nokia trying to tell us something? I’m not sure but we’re sure to see leaked S60 touch powered handsets over the internet, and well Nokia mounting a touch-screen on the N95 would make sense wouldn’t it?

Two Apple Store employees charged for stealing 332 iPhones

The two Apple Store employees who stole 332 iPhones at the Rockingham Park store have now been charged. Police have now arrested Joshua Garrand and Christopher Nashed and now face felony charges for stealing $132,468 worth of iPhones in the hope of selling them on the black market.

Police were contacted back in January by the Apple Store, however it took the police three months to dig all through the stores records so that they could build up a case against the store employees. William Ganley the Deputy Police Chief said “the department has dealt with a lot of employee thefts over the years, but nothing comparable to the iPhone case.”

Mozilla say no to Firefox on iPhone: Apple too to restrictive

At a recent meeting of top Mozilla people there was a lot up for discussion, and one topic was the Apple iPhone. The thing is Firefox is not supported on the handset, and the guys at Mozilla gave their reason why.

The problem is that Apple’s software requirements for the iPhone are too restrictive. John Lilly CEO of Mozilla said “Apple has not written a license which allows Firefox to run on the iPhone.” John did hint that the company will be looking to work with other platforms, like Android.

However Lilly did say that there are a handful of platforms on the market that are more open to them, one handset is the Nokia N810 internet tablet. All people need to do is get the code for Firefox and just run with it, this is made easy as Firefox uses the XUL interface.

Oh, not that way; I mean if you do have your phone sitting on the nightstand (80% of Britons) and happen to send and receive messages from it (25% of those), that doesn't mean you're not also indulging in a spot of hide the stylus. Much hyped BlackBerry 9000 leaked

We've known the BlackBerry 9000 is incoming for a while now - and the model was even confirmed by RIM's CEO recently - but the chaps at Engadget Mobile have managed to wangle a hands-on that leaves the much-rumoured device in no doubt at all.

A totally revamped from the ground up interface, described as having "modern, warm theme with wireframe icons and slick animations" is said to be "beautiful".

The biggest improvement is also the introduction of HSDPA - speedy 3.5G - as well as Wi-Fi, which should be enough to turn heads back to RIM even in the increasingly competitive smartphone market.

Previous rumours have put the new device's launch via Vodafone in May with an overall feature set showing quad-band EDGE, triband 3.6Mbps HSDPA, a 480 x 320 display, 2-megapixel camera and GPS. More as we have it...

The Motorola Z9 will be launching this April 1st apparently, with AT&T being the carrier. iLiberty frees my iPhone

My refurb AT&T iPhone finally arrived and I found a chance to test out iLiberty+ this afternoon. After wasting a day jailbreaking and messing with my new iPhone, I just could not bypass that annoying activation screen. Yes, I could ssh into the unit and run stuff from the command line but I had to keep working my way around "Connect to iTunes" to get to the SpringBoard screen. So I gave iLiberty+ a try.

After a few false starts, it got going and worked brilliantly. I was able to track progress with the on-screen updates and not only did it activate my iPhone but allowed it to work with a disposable Cingular SIM I had on-hand. All in all, a great success.

After activation though, I could not get iLiberty to work with the iPhone still connected. I wanted to grab screen shots and the program would not launch and stay launched. (I have crash logs if any of the developers are interested.) So in the end, I unplugged the iPhone in order to get the one screen shot you see here.

Part of me wanted to deactivate the iPhone and try again for a screen grab gallery but a much smarter part of me asked "why mess with success?" Given how badly I messed up the phone several times today, that was the part I listened to. A later, complete reboot seemed to fix the problem but I was in no position to go backwards after a day fending off cranky children and an impatient husband, all of whom seemed to think there was a world outside of iPhone.

How to make sure you text messages are permanently deleted

Apparently you can’t. One of the interesting aspects to the Kwame Kilpatrick text message scandal, where the mayor of Detroit and his chief-of-staff/ mistress were caught lying, via long discarded text messages is that while you can erase a message from your cell phone, that doesn’t mean the cell phone company is erasing it from their records. Steve Hall of the FBI explains:

“Hall says phone companies have the technology and the equipment to store everyone's phone history .. And the FBI has the power to to subpeona those records.”

Meaning if you want to cheat on your wife or do something illegal you’d better use some old school technology, because if you try to use text messages, as Kwame Kilpatrick and Eliot Spitzer found out, your hand is going to get caught in the virtual cookie jar.

CEO of Motorola doesn't even use a computer

So I've been reading today about the proposed spinning off of Motorola handsets division into a separate company; mystified why anyone would think this is a good idea, when clearly the right call is to fire Motorola CEO Greg Brown and just get someone competent to do his job.

Well apparently I'm not alone in that point of view. Engadget has just posted this article about Brown that includes the following:

"...Motorola's current CEO, Greg Brown, is so technologically out of touch he refuses to use a computer for communications, and has all his email correspondences printed by his secretary and replied to by dictation."

Wow. My grandfather had his PC laying untouched for a year because he couldn't figure out where the on switch was and even he knows how to check his e-mail by now. You'd think the head of a major technology would at least know as much as my grandfather... geez.

Anyway, the Engadget piece continues with an open letter from former Motorola employee Numair Faraz, documenting all the places Motorola and specifically Brown have gone wrong since the golden days of the Motorola RAZR.

Call Centers to US make India 2nd largest wireless market

Ok, that's probably not the real reason that India is set to become the world's second largest cell phone market (call centers probably use Skype) but how ironic would that be, if they knocked off the current number two, the United States because they were calling the United States?

Anyway, here's the facts: China has the most cellular subscribers at 540.5 million. America currently has 256 million cellular subscribers to India's 250.93 million; but India's cell phone penetration is only about 25%, and they're adding 8-9 million new subscribers every month; which would peg India to pass the US in total subscribers some time in mid April.

With America only adding 2-3 million subscribers a month, and it being a much more saturated wireless market, chances are America won't be number 2 again anytime soon.

Kwame Kilpatrick text messages lead to perjury charges

The day Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick had to know was coming is finally here, as both he and former chief of staff Christine Beatty have been charged with breaking 12 different laws including perjury and obstruction of justice.

Take a deep breath so you get this: Kilpatrick and Beatty fired city employee Gary Brown in 2002 for blowing the whistle on the two of them having an extra-marital affair with each other. While the mayor's office claimed Brown retired voluntarily, Brown disagreed. Kilpatrick and Beatty might have gotten away with the lie except investigators found 14,000 text messages back and forth to each other, including one that straight up read "we are going through this mess because of a decision that we made to fire Gary Brown."

You can read our original coverage of the Kwame Kilpatrick text messages here.

Anyway, while Kilpatrick has thus far been able to remain in office, despite an over $8 million dollar pay out to the fired parties, this will probably be the end of the line for him as the Detroit City Charter does not allow an elected official convicted of a felony committed while in office to keep their post.

Lindsay Lohan cell phone sex tape: wasn't her

In a development shocking only because it took over two days to figure out, TMZ has confirmed that the girl in the Lindsay Lohan sex tape isn't Lindsay Lohan. Apparently Lohan’s career has taken such a nosedive she can’t even get cast in her own sex tape at this point.

Anyway, TMZ found the grainy cell phone footage, along with two other clips, had been loaded up to the porn site XTube two months ago; with it quickly becoming apparent that the girl in these clips did not share Lohan’s likeness.

The Cell Freak.com has diligently been covering this story since it first broke. We first reported that a girl had given a blowjob here, and finally found the video of the mentioned sex act here. Up until now, The Cell Freak had been unable to confirm or deny the girl’s identity because we have no idea what a naked girl looks like, let alone Lindsay Lohan.

iphone Accessories: The iPhone Condom

For humans water is fountain of life. In terms of iPhones, it's the fastest way to flush $500 down the drain. Well actually literally flushing an iPhone down the drain would be the fastest way to flush an iPhone down the drain... and that includes water... totally losing the concept of a metaphor here...

What was the point? Oh right - so you can spend a load of money on a designer case to protect your iPhone from the liquid known as water or you can just go to the supermarket and get a common ziplock bag.

Mobile applications in school: the spycam

There’s not much more of a thankless job than being a teacher in a public high school. You’re essentially being paid to baby-sit people’s kids while they’re at work, but unlike a real babysitter, it’s your job to make sure they don’t do anything fun.

And to make things even worth, now that every teenager has a camera phone, your inevitable nervous breakdown will be captured and placed on YouTube for prosperity. You can argue if kids should have the right to upload these clips or not, but really that’s missing the forest from the trees.

The underlining point is students don’t want to be in school and the only way to make learning more effective is to let them talk about what they want to talk about anyway. Which is why I’d like to suggest Boyfriend Class.

Boyfriend Class would consist of writing an essay as homework talking about your boyfriend. Everyday you’d read it to the class and be graded on things like writing skill and grammar. For instance, if your boyfriend was just caught cheating on you; you’d lose points if you called the girl he was caught cheating with a “hore” not a “whore”

There would also be a male version called “Talking about the girls I banged last night even though I don’t even know what a female looks like” class.

I can’t guarantee this would lead to kids learning more, but at least the cell phone videos they post on YouTube will be more entertaining.

Lou Reed on turning off cell phones in Texan

Lou Reed has always been a New York City man, but that doesn't mean he can't translate to other languages. When a cell phone went off during his keynote address at the South By Southwest Festival in Texas, he dealt with it the only way a punk icon should. Confrontationally.

"What does 'Turn off your cell phone' mean in Texas? Do you have to say it differently, like 'Howdy?' Shove it in a cow."

To be fair Texas is the Lonestar State, West Virginia is the shove it in your cow state, but the point being if even Lou Reed is schooling you in etiquette, you should probably just turn off your damn phone.

Think N' Spell neckband talks on phone without talking

Okay, yeah it only recognizes 150 words and it takes like an hour to process three words... but the idea is cool.

The way the Think N' Spell prototype works is the neckband intercepts the nerve signals being sent to your vocal cords, and translates it into words without you having to open your mouth. The technology is aimed at allowing victims of such conditions as Lou Gehrig's Disease to talk on the phone after their body has made that impossible though tradition means.

It's a great idea but the practicality of Think N' Spell neckbands will only get worse before it gets better. In an effort to enlarge the neckband's vocabulary, the next generation will focus on identifying phonemes rather than entire words, making word recognition that much slower.

Ashley Alexandra Dupré pics: Eliot Spitzer's hooker exposed

Well the New York Times has finally identified the call girl that brought down New York Govenor Eliot Spitzer and her name is Ashley Youmans... or Ashley Rae Maika DiPietro... or Ashley Alexandra Dupré as she's currently calling herself.

But it's never been "Kristen" as she was called in the phone calls and text messages referenced in the FBI affidavit... nor is she really a swimsuit model as The Emperor’s Club website claimed.

Ashley Alexandra Dupré Jan 2008

Ashley Alexandra Dupré's actual story is she's a 22-year-old that comes from a broken home. After a man she was living with found out he had two children, he walked out on her, leaving her needing to pay the rent and into the high priced call girl world of The Emperor’s Club.

It turns out Ashley Alexandra Dupré is also an aspiring musician and you can listen to her music on her Myspace page which also features plenty of Ashley Alexandra Dupré pictures. No Ashley Alexandra Duprés pics as explicit as you'd expect to see of a call girl but she's very beautiful, as you can see here.

Eliot Spitzer call girl text messages

Unless you've been living under a rock for the last two days you've heard of the Emperor's Club and how that relates to Eliot Spitzer, or how he's now more commonly known "Client-9".

The New York Governer officially resigned this morning, just 15 months after getting elected with a record 70% of the popular vote, and with polls showing 70% of New Yorkers now didn't want him. What caused his fall from grace is a complex question, involving reckless personal behavior and an obsure 1910 law called the Mann Act, meant to keep Black Men from having out-of-state White girlfriends.

But regardless Eliot Spitzer would still be in office next Monday morning if it wasn't for the Federal wiretaps that recorded the phone conversations and text messages between Emperor's Club empoyees and Eliot Spitzer.

The Smoking Gun has posted the FBI affidavit and the exchanges between Eliot Spitzer and his whores which reveal one key thing. The biggest problem with paying a hooker $4,300 isn't getting the money... it's figuring out how to withdraw that large amount of money without your bank reporting it.

Anyway, you can read all the Eliot Spitzer call girl phone calls text messages here.

UPDATE: The call girl involved with Eliot Spitzer has been revealed to be the 22-year-old Ashley Alexandra Dupré. You can see Ashley Alexandra Dupré pictures here.

iPhoneNotes allows downloading and uploading notes to a jailbroken iPhone

The lack of notes syncing on the iPhone and iPod touch just continues to baffle me. Just like To Do syncing it seems like a no brainer, especially in the case of notes since it's such a pain to type anything very long on the iPhone keyboard. The iPhone hacking community has been working on the problems and a clever Mac application called iPhoneNotes bring basic notes transfer between a Mac and a jailbroken iPhone.

The application actually works over wifi and requires that your iPhone be jailbroken. Unfortunately, the developer's site is somewhat lacking in instructions. You need to have OpenSSH installed (and working) on the iPhone and then when you run iPhoneNotes on your Mac it searches for the iPhone with Bonjour. Once it finds the iPhone and you put in your credentials, you should be able to download and upload notes. It does not provide true syncing; rather you download your Notes database from your iPhone, make changes on the Mac, then upload it back. Nonetheless, it works and provides a way to upload notes from your Mac to your iPhone.

Because it requires OpenSSH this doesn't seem like a long term solution. Nonetheless, if you need to get notes from your Mac to your iPhone, this is one of the best options at this time. iPhoneNotes is a free download from V1ru8.

iPhone Clone Takes in 2 SIMs

Not only does this handset look like the iPhone, it even features a dual-SIM carriage so that you will be able to carry two numbers in a single handset. What are some of the goodies available in exchange for $199.67?

* 3.2" touch screen LCD display with 16:9 aspect ratio
* 1.3 megapixel camera
* microSD memory card slot
* Dual SIM carriage

I've always found dual-SIM phones to be more of a hassle than convenience - after all, you can only hold conversations one at a time, so it would be better to just carry two handsets around since you can hang up on the less important call and talk to the more favored caller.

Nokia 6300i

Nokia rolls out the 6300i that offers a fully integrated VoIP client in addition to its GSM cell phone capabilities, providing you with the best of both worlds. Hooking up to an available wireless network is a snap, and the fact that you can make VoIP calls with this clearly encourages you to save more on your minutes and rely on VoIP instead when communicating with your close and loved ones. The 6300i can store an astounding 2,000 VoIP, home and cell numbers - more friends than you can shake a stick at. These can be listed side-by-side, while dedicated WLAN and VoIP symbols ensure you know exactly what the connection status and type of phone call is being made at the moment. No idea on how much it costs though.
